Affordable Shopping: $70 for 7 Meals!

Emily Fidler and Rachel Leung, two students from
Johnson & Wales
University
, completed a project during their internship at the Center for Human Nutrition that assessed different healthful food and recipe options for a family of four budgeting for $70 a week at the grocery. They first assembled a pantry list of items that should be on hand at all times in order to have a variety of options for meals, costing less than $60 for the entire list. The weekly grocery list provides examples of foods that could be purchased during a weekly visit to the store, consisting of seven different main items (whole chicken, beans, ground beef, canned tuna, pork chops, frozen fish filets, and frozen chicken breasts). Each food item is used in at least four different recipes provided. The idea is that by purchasing everything on the weekly grocery list, a family of four will be able to make at least one meal out of each main item, assuming seven meals for the $70.
